Picture of oil drumDon't Be Crude!
Every time someone changes the motor oil in a car, they're left with a pan full of used oil. Too often, that oil is dumped on the ground or into a storm drain. And that pollutes streams, rivers, lakes, and the water underground.

Twelve-year-old Barbara Brown, of Victoria, Texas, learned about this kind of pollution and decided to do something about it. She and her friends started an oil recycling campaign called "Don't Be Crude." The campaign urged local people to take their used oil to a recycling site rather than dump it. The oil would then be sold to a company to make asphalt for paving roads.

After 4 years, there are now 17 recycling sites in and around Victoria. And, every year since 1997, they've collected and recycled about 40,000 gallons of used oil!
